Roger Federer plays with a natural gut hybrid that sells for… $45 a set! It’s sold by Wilson and is called, Champion’s Choice. For the rest of us muggles, we’ll just have to settle for something else. If you’re looking for that Federer power and spin but on a tighter budget, I think I have the solution for you.

You might have switched to a multifilament due to arm issues. It solved the arm issue but created another: it doesn’t spin the ball. A full bed of NXT or NRG2 may be super comfortable but the strings fray and they lock up. Until now…

I’m the type of person who thinks there is a solution for everything if you just search hard enough. And I think I’ve found it! This hybrid has just as much comfort as your Wilson NXT but can finally put some shape on the ball. I’ve selected a 16g crisp & powerful multifilament in the mains that’s as powerful as natural gut. Combined with a smooth and slick PEEK cross, it allows the multifilament main strings to impart spin with ease. Don’t be fooled by the PEEK strings in the crosses. They may look like a polyester monofilament but they’re actually softer than the multifilament in the mains! It will hopefully restore your faith in a string design that some people feel is outdated.

UPDATE: I’ve created 2 variants of this hybrid that replaces the 16g multifilament mains with a thinner string. Thin is in!

  1. 18g multifilament. A much thinner main string for those who rarely break strings, this is an amazingly comfortable variant of this hybrid. It’s pockets the ball better and has slightly more power. I don’t recommend this for those who play with a very open 16×19 pattern racquet.
  2. 18g synthetic. VERY similar to the 18g multifilament variant but $10 cheaper, is slightly more durable and surprisingly pockets the ball JUST as well. Great for tighter string patterned racquets. ie. 18×20, 18×19 or many dunlop 16×19 racquets.
  • 60lbs max tension
  • 18g variant pockets the ball EXACTLY like natural gut. I use the 18g synthetic variant for my travel racquets since a flight or humidity can break natural gut
  • 18g variant can spin the ball BETTER than the 16g
  • doesn’t go dead like poly because there’s no poly in the crosses
  • maintains tension extremely well
  • yes, I know it doesn’t look EXACTLY like Federer’s strings but we can use our imagination, can’t we?
